美国中小学生暑期活动丰富，但正经的家庭作业并不多，进入高中之后，学校才会开始布置“暑期书单”，引导学生由浅入深地去读书。在阅读作业中，学校会设计内容丰富的“指引”，从写读书报告到根据书籍做手工，甚至谱曲、配乐，通过阅读来锻炼孩子各方面的思考能力和动手能力。
在高中以前，美国学生的暑假基本上是没有作业的
暑假带孩子回国，经常，和俩孩子一起四处乱溜达。碰上我认识的熟人，总会问：“孩子放假啦？多长啊？有好多作业吧？”
当听说在美国的孩子有将近3个月的假期，竟然没有一天的作业，那些叔叔，阿姨真是几乎惊跳起来。
其实，美国大多数学校放假没有作业也不是什么好事儿。孩子疯玩了一个假期，经常开学后要用一个月的时间补忘掉的知识。太浪费时间了！
我的孩子逢假期就这么放羊似地玩了一年又一年，直到儿子小学四年级的时候。那年，他的班主任是一个特别负责任的老师，在暑假前的家长会上，她把儿子从一年级到四年级的成绩做成表格给我看。我很吃惊地发现儿子在暑假后，成绩总是掉到了万丈深渊里，然后开学后再慢慢地爬上他原来的水平线。
老师指着这些触目惊心的“深渊”，说希望我这个暑假能自己督促着儿子读书，练习数学，这样他上五年级时可以参加一个考试，过了，就免修五年级数学，直接上六年级数学。我赶紧点头称是。
这以后呢，就尽量让儿子、女儿假期里做几道题，不求多学，只求别把学的都忘光了。
现在，美国的一些老师和学校也意识到假期没作业是个问题，但还是没有什么具体行动。现在，我女儿也要上小学四年级了，这些年，只有去年寒假她的老师给布置了几页作业。
儿子开学要上高中了，这个高中的英文老师倒是给留了个暑假阅读作业，我看了，觉得和我在中国上学时的暑假作业太不一样了，抄在这儿，给大家瞧个新鲜：

For summer reading, we would like for you to read Watership Down by Richard Adams. This book can be purchased atBooks-a-Million, Borders, or Mr. K's. If this presents a problem, please contact the high school.

To encourage active reading, we would like you to choose TWO activities from the following list:

1. Choose four of the main characters, and print a poem or song that corresponds to each of them. Then explain why you chose the song you did with a well-developed paragraph for each song,
请选择书中四个主要人物，针对每个人物，打印一首诗或者歌词。然后，用一个自然段详细解释你为什么选择每首歌词。
2.Compose and record a musical score with lyrics or record a montage of existing musical compositions to use as a back drop for the journey. For your original score or the compilation, write a comprehensive explanation that discusses how the composition or the songs reflect the rabbits' journey.
作曲并写下带歌词的乐谱或者剪辑别人的乐曲，用这个乐曲作为兔子路程的背景音乐。不管音乐是你的原创还是剪辑，请写下详细的解释，说明为什么这个音乐或是歌反映了兔子的旅程。
3. Create a list that rank seach of the warrens based on efficiency, organization, and happiness of the population. Explain why you ranked them this way and explain how each “leader” could have been a better leader.
根据每个养兔场的效率／组织／所有兔子的快乐程度列出一个等级清单，解释你为什么这样列等级，讨论每一个养兔场的“领导”怎么做能成为一个更优秀的领导人。
4.Construct an illustrated timeline that reflects the chronology of the novel.Find pictures of the actual places whenever possible.
做一个时间表来反映小说的年表。如果可能，找出每个真实场景的照片。
5.Choose three significant scenes from the novel, and construct a photo collage, or illustrate the chosen scenes.
选择小说中三个重要场景，做一个图片集锦，或者图解你选择的场景。
6.Build a scale model of the interior of any of the warrens.
选一个养兔场做一个内部微缩模型。
7.Write a list of interview questions, and create a video or audio recording of an interview with Woundwart conducted by one of the following: Bigwig, Hazel, Fiver or Keehar. The interview should take place after the events of the novel have occurred.
写出一个采访清单，用录像或录音纪录由下列人物中（Bigwig， Hazel，Fiver，或者keehar）的一个采访Woundwart的过程。
8.Construct a three-dimensional object that represents the meaning of the book to you. In addition, include a well-developed paragraph that explains how the object reflects the novel's meaning.
做一个三维立体模型，代表对你来说这本书的意义。另外，附上一个自然段的文字介绍，解释为什么这个立体物反映了这部小说的意义。
